Top ten US real estate deals of the week

10. Wall Street 2

Money Never Sleepsopens this week. Everyone is excited about the sequel to Oliver Stone's 1987 Oscar-winning masterpiece and, unless you are a Chicago Cubs fan who has gone into hiding as they are once again eliminated from the possibility of a World Series appearance, you have probably seen a few of the movie's promos.

Gordon Gecko (Michael Douglas) is finally out of prison (they had to let him go to free up room for other Wall Street hustlers) and his mission is to warn everyone of an impending world financial collapse. Sound familiar?

Gordon's ally to save the world is his estranged daughter's boyfriend Jacob (Shia LaBeouf). Jacob seems to be a very successful trader in his own right living in this upscale Big Apple two-level penthouse. If you have an extra $15 million, this fabulous penthouse with almost 10,000sf of inside and outside space can be yours. Rest assured, the movie is only fiction. I am pretty sure.

9. Erskine Manor, South Bend, Indiana

From the early 1900s until the 1960s the Studebaker Corporation in South Bend, Indiana was a major US automotive manufacturer. Studebaker models included the Hawk, Avanti (Studebaker's answer to GM's Corvette and Ford's Thunderbird), Champion, Rockne (named after Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne) and Lark.

Albert Erskine was the Studebaker CEO in the go-go 1920s when the company made lots of money and Mr. Erskine built his magnificent family mansion that he named Erskine Manor.

However, just a few years later, things weren't going so well, what with the depression and a bunch of worthless Studebaker stock, so Mr. Erskine came home one day and shot himself in the heart right there in his big, expensive mansion.

Erskine Manor was then turned into a nun's convent and later converted into four upscale condos. The price on this 7,680sf condo has been reduced from over $1 million to $750k. This condo is exquisite and unique and five miles from the University of Notre Dame.

8. Vail Valley estate, Colorado

Have you ever wanted to hang your hat in a romantic Italian-style villa in the Rocky Mountains? Well, here's your chance. On September 30th, this 11,026sf Vail Valley estate that was originally listed for $9.5 million will be auctioned to the highest bidder, regardless of price.

In addition to features like Java limestone, 1,000sf of stone terracing and wood beam ceilings, the home overlooks Spring Creek with spectacular views of the Sawatch Mountains.

Take advantage of four area golf courses, designed by Tom Fazio, Jack Nicklaus, Dave Pelz and Hale Irwin.

The Vail Valley has been the host of the annual American Enterprise Institute World Forum, where major world leaders have met since 1982 to discuss international political and economic issues.

The city is also the co-site with Beaver Creek for the annual Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival. And, of course, ski season is just around the corner.

7. Frank Sinatra’s former home in Los Angeles

In my mind the greatest male singers of my lifetime are Mick Jagger, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra and Robert Goulet.

What could be cooler than to live in one of the homes where these guys actually sang in the shower?

Well, Mick's home is out unless you are willing to move to England and it would probably be annoying at Mr. Presley's home with all the tour groups traipsing through your living room every day.

But don't despair. Ol’ Blue Eyes’ home is now on the market for $22.5 million in Los Angeles. And there's even more celebrity status here, as this is also where Nancy “These boots are made for walking” Sinatra grew up.

It looks like a pretty nice place with stone walls, tiled loggias, two libraries, a garden room, chauffeur's quarters and, of course, a sparkling pool.

I was only kidding about Mr. Goulet as he was living on a yacht when he died in 2007.

6. Rowan Lofts, Los Angeles

Although there are a few negative vibes in Los Angeles these days, like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and the Dodgers, there are lots of good things going on.

Here is a double good thing at the Rowan Lofts with a big closeout sale plus a 75 percent Los Angeles historic building tax reduction that never ends.

Units feature original exposed brick walls, designer Italian kitchens, glass-paneled interior doors, custom bath vanities and new hardwood floors.

Only about 20 out of 206 loft-style condos are left and prices start at $239,900; and the 75 percent property tax reduction will save you thousands of dollars more every year.

So for all you Los Angeles USC football fans, don't be discouraged. Even though you are not going to a bowl game this year, you can still grab one of these fabulous condos.

5. Silo Point, Baltimore

Baltimore's Inner Harbor is much different from what is was in the 1960s and 70s when it was a rundown, smelly port mostly populated by dockworkers, druggies, hookers, crooks and people who were lost trying to find nearby Fort McHenry where Francis Scott Key wrote the Star-Spangled Banner.

According to local legend, Billie Holiday once worked in a brothel on the harbor. Today the Inner Harbor is one of the top business, sports and tourist centers on the East Coast.

Inner Harbor attractions include the National Aquarium, Harbor Place, Maryland Science Center and the USS Constellation—the last Civil War vessel afloat.

There are water taxis and five-star hotels and upscale restaurants. The Baltimore Ravens and Orioles stadiums and the Babe Ruth Museum are just a few blocks from the Inner Harbor.

Another impressive resurrection on the Inner Harbor is Silo Point—a former grain terminal that has been converted into amazing upscale condos. Silo Point has won awards from both the New York Times and CNBC. There are 30 available plans and prices start at just $289,000.

4. Terra Beachside, Miami Beach

Here is your chance to live in perhaps the most glamorous city in the US at a price that is a few hundred thousand dollars lower than a few years ago.

Lazy days on the beach and late nights at some of the most eclectic bars in the world are just outside your door.

Terra Beachside is a new, beautiful contemporary development right on Collins Avenue with steps to the beach. Units feature an 18-foot ceiling height in the living rooms and high-end European finishes in the kitchen and bathrooms.

A Zen-influenced atrium spans the entire length of the property. It also has a three-story lifestyle center with a curving lap pool, Jacuzzi, fitness center, and media room.

Prices now start at $250,000. Can you really blame LeBron?

Cleveland is a nice city but which would you pick? Plus the Atlantic Ocean probably won't catch on fire.

This 21,000sf, neo-Italian Renaissance mansion is something you only see in the movies, with its limestone exterior, high ceilings, enormous skylight, marble fireplace surrounds, hand-carved moldings, a super dramatic entrance foyer and a spectacular sweeping marble staircase that would be perfect for a Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire dance routine.

2. Private island off the coast of Washington

This might be a once in a lifetime opportunity—your very own private island!

Here are 216 acres, six beaches and 13,000 feet of shoreline off the coast of Washington.

It is completely self sustaining with a home, a well and a 19,000-gallon water tower, four generators, a septic tank, 500-gallon fuel trailer tank, two 500-gallon fuel storage tanks, and 500-gallon and 100-gallon propane tanks. It even has a sawmill and a treehouse.

It would be the perfect place to hide away from civilization until things get better. Are you listening '49ers, Cowboys and Vikings fans?

1. Condos in Ave Maria, Florida

What do Domino's Pizza, nuns and Southwest Florida have in common?

The city of Ave Maria is the ultimate planned city near Naples, Florida that was created with a donation of $250 million from Domino's Pizza founder and Catholic philanthropist Tom Monaghan.

Monaghan, who was raised in an orphanage and built Domino's from one Michigan pizza joint into over 6,000 stores, wanted to build a spiritual community that promoted traditional American ideals and a strong reliance on his Roman Catholic faith.

Monaghan is also the founder and chancellor of the town's centerpiece Ave Maria University, where Latin is still used at Mass and nuns wear 1950s-era habits.

The school's students dress modestly, alcohol is restricted and the dorms are off limits to members of the opposite sex.

Sound like a nice alternative to the hectic lifestyle that most of us live with? Like much of Florida, condo prices in Ave Maria have been reduced by about 50 percent, starting at $250,000 for a 2br, 2ba luxury unit.
