Miami International Airport adds firefighting capability

The new Miami Rental Car Center (RCC) has become a little safer now that the Miami-Dade Fire Department has taken delivery of a Rosenbauer Airwolf Quick Response Vehicle (QRV), designed to fight fires in structures with parking ramps and garages which traditional fire trucks cannot access because of their size and weight.

Rosenbauer is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of fire fighting vehicles; the high-tech QRV, mounted on a Ford F450 crew cab, is able to maneuver inside tight areas of the RCC.

The four storey MIA Rental Car Center opened on July 13, 2010 to serve Miami International Airport passengers and South Florida rental car customers, bringing together the operations of 16 rental car companies under one roof.

The $387 million RCC is the first major structure of the $1.7 billion Miami Intermodal Center (MIC) Program. It was built by the Florida Department of Transportation and is being operated and maintained by the Miami-Dade Aviation Department.

The RCC is designed to serve 28,000 customers daily, with the capability to wash and re-fuel 300 vehicles per hour with its multi-level fueling system—the first of its kind in the US.

It is currently served by a shuttle bus service, which is due to be replaced in the fall of 2011 by the MIA Mover, an elevated 1.25-mile automated transit system capable of transporting 3,000 passengers an hour between MIA and the RCC, reducing gas emissions at the airport by 30 percent.
