Most people are familiar with Valencia’s Metro without even knowing it. The world-renowned Spanish architect, Sergio Caltrava - whose signature style has become emblematic of the regeneration of countless cities over the past 20 years - is a son of Valencia. Arguably his most famous design is that of the Alameda bridge and Metrovalencia subway station, all managed by its parent company, Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV).

Botswana is home to one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Despite being a landlocked country with a miniscule population of a little over 2 million people, Botswana is an undoubted Sub-Saharan success story. Academics argue about the reasons for this success, but two reasons are mentioned again and again. The first is good institutions. The second, has been the country’s ability to exploit and market its outstanding mining resources.

The Paris Metro is renowned the world over for being a work of art as much as a transit system. A total of 86 of the system’s stations retain their original art nouveau-inspired entrances, a throwback to the Belle Epoque. But this historic beauty, undoubtedly part of the metro’s charm, also tells of its need to modernize. 100 years ago, the Paris urban area held a population of less than 5 million people. In 2021, that number has tripled.

Matching state-of-the-art mobility solutions with archeological heritage - this challenge is currently being mastered by our Italian colleagues in Rome. 30 escalators and 14 elevators are about to be installed at two metro stops of the new Line C, which will take passengers on a spectacular journey of ancient findings!

Thyssenkrupp Elevator will install 30 escalators and 14 elevators in Amba Aradam/Ipponio and Fori Imperiali, two new metro stations of Line C in Rome. The company has closed a 3.5 million Euro contract for the installation and maintenance of the systems at Italy’s longest metro line. Therewith, thyssenkrupp brings tomorrow’s transport solutions to one of Europe’s historically most important cities.

“The extension of Rome’s C line is an exciting job – not least because the Amba Aradam/Ipponio station is rather spectacular. The metro brings thousands of tourists and citizens right to the heart of ancient Rome every day, so the stations not only have to be attractive but highly functional, comfortable, and secure. We are delighted to support the C line’s completion with our premium mobility solutions that demonstrate how tomorrow’s mobility perfectly matches with the city’s rich heritage,” says Peter Walker, CEO of thyssenkrupp Elevator.

There will be three elevators and 14 escalators installed at the Amba Aradam/Ipponio stop. One of those which will reach a mere 25 meters in length. Moreover, the passengers will enjoy a spectacular scenery: One section of the station will be transformed into a museum with historically valuable findings such as the "Domus of the Centurion". The second station is Fori Imperiali, adjacent to the Colosseum. Here, thyssenkrupp Elevator will install 16 escalators and 8 elevators. At this new stop, tourists and citizens have direct access to the geographical center of the ancient Roman Empire.

“The realization of the C line represents the most important public work realized in Italy in the last 20 years and we are proud to take part in it,” comments Luigi Maggioni, CEO of thyssenkrupp Elevator British Islands, BeNeLux, Nordics, and Italy. “Our specialized technicians will work on the project to better integrate the installations in the extremely delicate archaeological contexts of the Capital.”

The development of Rome’s metro system began in 2009 when thyssenkrupp Elevator started the first supply of 85 escalators and 53 elevators. With the current contract, now there are 115 escalators and 67 elevators installed that have a total value of over 15 million Euros. All systems carry over 24,000 passengers an hour in the metropolitan area, equal to 432,000 per day.

Besides Rome, thyssenkrupp Elevator maintains mobility solutions at metro stations in Milan and Naples as well as at railway stations such as the North Lot of Grandi Stazioni (Milan Centrale, Turin Porta Nuova, Genoa Porta Principe, Bologna Centrale, Bologna AV, etc.). That makes thyssenkrupp Elevator in Italy country’s leader in public transport maintenance services.

STEER GROUP - ITALY

Steer is a business consultancy working across cities, infrastructure and transport, with offices in London, Bologna, Rome and 18 other cities worldwide. Our Design for Movement team are specialists in delivering innovative strategies and user-centred solutions for branding, wayfinding and passenger information for rail, urban transit and public realm (pedestrian and cycling) across the globe. Our experience spans the Middle East, Europe, North and Latin America and includes the design for transit projects such as Jeddah Metro, Transmilenio Bogota, Mexico City's Nochebus, Metrolinx's Ontario Line and Bologna's Marconi Express.

Steer developed the station wayfinding and passenger information programme for Metro C, working closely with the architectural and engineering teams to deliver full sign schedules, including information planning, sign location and content for all signs and structures.

Influenced by an understanding and recognition of the importance of retaining familiarity for users of Roma Metropolitana, the design uses font, colours, layout, messages and symbols akin to the main metro network. New elements brought by Metro C, such as platform screen doors for automated trains, required the expansion of the traditional wayfinding signage system into a wider family of sign products.

The system adopted is very simple and clean and extremely effective at the same time. The wayfinding is integrated in the architecture wherever possible, reducing the need for accessory signing structures. This results in uncluttered environments, where signs are positioned consistently and visibly, which helps usability and legibility.

Our team delivered a full wayfinding manual including design guidelines and rules for sign positioning and orientation, font sizing to ensure optimal legibility, fabrication materials, a bespoke family of pictograms and customised line diagrams, as well as emergency and statutory signing requirements.

SGS Studio Geotecnico Strutturale

Submitted by dev_ln on Wed, 08/04/2021 - 15:24

SGS Studio Geotecnico Strutturale is an Italian design firm specialised in geotechnical structures and underground works. Founded in 1956 and currently lead by Valter Capata, SGS develops design works from the preliminary stage to the detailed phase including technical support during construction for several projects in Italy and abroad.

SGS has always been involved in the long design process of the Rome metro system.  Since 2007 SGS prepared the executive and construction design of several civil works along the Metro C line between Giglioli and Fori imperiali areas. In particular, SGS has been responsible for the evaluation of the geotechnical model for the whole line, for the executive design of 3 stations and of all tunnels excavated by traditional method, and for the review of monitoring data.

Particularly challenging has been the excavation underneath the existing Metro A Line at San Giovanni station completed in 2016 where ground freezing technique has been used to allow excavating in granular soils under high groundwater table. Also, the connecting tunnels between such station and the nearby shaft have been executed in a special system to face difficult ground conditions. In fact, the excavation started with a 3.0m diameter cutter head (micro-TBM), then radial chemical and grout injections have been carried out to reduce permeability of sandy-gravelly formations and finally the widening of the section was achieved by full-face excavation with steel fore-poling, steel ribs and shotcrete.

SGS is now working on the design of the future structures on the Metro C line and we are very proud of helping this project to become real.

It is more than 50 years that SGS carries out design work for the underground construction. We discuss with the Client to identify the most suitable solution, and then we use our own history, dedication, skills and creativeness to help to make it real.
