French pharmaceutical group Sanofi-Aventis has agreed to buy US biotech company Genzyme for €14.8 billion, following months of wrangling over price.

The deal will give Paris-based Sanofi valuable access to the market for drugs that treat rare diseases.

Patents on some of Sanofi’s bestselling drugs have recently expired, leading to a downturn in sales. Its blood thinning drug Plavix, for example, is expected to face generic competition next year. Last year, Plavix accounted for about nine per cent of Sanofi's total sales.

Looking good, feeling great
A focus on niche markets has proved to be a successful strategy for Prime Product Manufacturing, as Ruari McCallion learned from managing director Kaaiman Schutte.
While many successful businesses around the world have started with a good idea, a garage and hard work, few have grown as fast or as effectively as Prime Product Manufacturing. Currently based in Pelindaba, 25 kilometres from Pretoria, its roots go back to the mid-1990s when it was established as a corporation in 1997 by Mike Rigby and Koos Basson, who remain senior directors. It now occupies a 13,000 square metre factory on the NECSA Eco-Industrial facility—but not for much longer.

Going for gold
The pharmaceuticals industry is changing rapidly and Penn Pharmaceuticals is expanding to exploit a whole new range of opportunities. Chief operating officer Darren Hassey talks to Gay Sutton about plans to treble capacity at the South Wales plant and make the company the gold standard for customer care.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year, Penn Pharmaceuticals began life at Penn in Buckinghamshire before moving to its current location in Tafarnaubach, Tredegar in 1986, where it has breathed life back into one of the depressed coal mining centres of South Wales. Today the company is not only a major employer in the area, but it has carved a reputation for excellence in the pharmaceuticals industry, particularly in areas such as paediatric medicine where it has special expertise in poorly soluble molecules, as well as working with potent and teratogenic materials—those that can cause birth defects—semi solids, ointments and creams.

Making the grade
Okorusu fluorspar mine in Namibia has weathered all the knocks that life has thrown at it, including the dumping of cheap Chinese products on the western market. Gay Sutton finds out from Mark Dawe how the company has risen to the challenges.
Fluorspar is one of nature’s beautiful minerals. Naturally crystallising into clusters of cubic and more complex geometric shapes, it is found in an enormous variety of colours in locations around the world, and has been used since Greek and Roman times for ornaments, drinking vessels and vases. It has also given its name to fluorescence—the ability to emit visible light when bombarded by radiation of a different frequency such as ultra violet light.

During the first week in June, South African mining technology and services company Mintek will be celebrating its 75th anniversary, commemorating a lifetime of significant achievements. A five-day programme of events will culminate in a high-level international two-day conference and a glittering gala dinner attended by the industry’s most influential people.
