Making the case for mining plastic debris from the oceans for fuel. 

Upcycling is the practice of taking waste and transforming it into something of similar or greater use and value. The Upcycle the Gyres Society is making waves arguing that now is the time to clean up the oceans from floating plastic pollution and transform it into billions of dollars worth of fuel.

Recently launched, with a crowd-funding component, its path forward is to help localize high concentrations of marine plastic debris, collect underwater micro plastics, and surface macro plastics, and turn them into diesel, gasoline, and kerosene.

Swiss food giant Nestlé has agreed to acquire Pfizer Nutrition for $11.85 billion, it has been announced.

Nestlé said the acquisition would be a strategic fit with its infant nutrition business, given US-based Pfizer Nutrition’s complementary portfolio and strong presence in high-growth markets.

Nestlé described Pfizer Nutrition as a high-quality, high-growth infant nutrition business with strong brands, value-creating and accretive to the Nestlé model.

DuPont announced today an extension of its collaboration with the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics (ACPFG) to improve the productivity of cereal crops.

The expanded program brings a new focus on advanced cereal breeding through molecular markers, discovery research for agronomic traits and hybrid seed production in wheat. 

The collaboration will also continue working toward increasing drought tolerance and decreasing the need for soil-applied nitrogen fertilizer in leading production crops, including corn, soybeans, canola, rice and sorghum.

Swiss food giant Nestlé has announced a RMB 2.5 billion investment in China’s milk district.

The mayor of Shuangcheng, Mao Chen, and Nestlé’s director of Production Technology for the Greater China Region, Zhan Yudong, have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop modern dairy farming in the milk district.

The aim of the agreement is to ensure the district becomes China’s benchmark for best practice in dairy farming and management, Nestlé said.
