Royal Dutch Shell reported results for Q1 2012 today, with profits up through a combination of improvements in performance and volumes, as well as strong oil prices.

Shell’s first quarter 2012 earnings were $7.7 billion compared with $6.9 billion in the same quarter a year ago – an increase of 11 percent.

“We are making good progress against our targets to deliver a more competitive performance,” said chief executive officer Peter Voser.

Premier Oil is to acquire EnCore Oil for approximately £221 million, the two companies have announced.

London, UK-based Premier said the acquisition is in line with its strategy of acquiring high quality assets. The deal will increase its interest in UK Licence PL1430, including the Catcher field, by 15 per cent, taking its overall interest to 50 per cent. It will also provide Premier with operatorship of the Catcher area.

Catcher is one of the largest discoveries in the UK North Sea in recent years.

West Africa-focused Stellar Diamonds has reported “encouraging” initial diamond recoveries from drill core samples of the company's Droujba kimberlite pipe in south-east Guinea.

The company recovered 538 diamonds from 291.62kg of kimberlite, including five commercial-sized diamonds larger than 0.85mm.

The majority of the diamonds recovered are classified as white, colourless and transparent.

Mining giant Xstrata has said it will spend R4.9 billion (€510 million) to boost capacity of ferrochrome production and cut costs with a more energy-efficient smelter in South Africa.

Mining giant Xstrata has said it will spend R4.9 billion (€510 million) to boost capacity of ferrochrome production and cut costs with a more energy-efficient smelter in South Africa.

Xstrata, one of the world's biggest producers of ferrochrome, has approved the second phase of expansion at its Lion ferrochrome complex, which is struggling to meet power needs.

Under the plans, a new smelter will be built with a capacity of 360,000 tonnes per year, boosting the group's overall ferrochrome capacity to over 2.3 million tonnes.

Energy Automation Systems, Inc. (EASI), which develops, manufactures and markets energy saving technologies, has started construction on a $1.5 million, 20,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in Gallatin, Tennessee.

Energy Automation Systems, Inc. (EASI), which develops, manufactures and markets energy saving technologies, has started construction on a $1.5 million, 20,000 square-foot manufacturing facility in Gallatin, Tennessee.

The company expects to manufacture approximately $30 million of products annually at the new site.

The facility is located on an eight-acre tract of land that EASI officials bought 10 years ago in anticipation of company growth. Project completion is scheduled in late December 2010.
