Attitudes to drunk driving have changed our behavior. So it's routine now: the designated driver, the understanding that you won't let your friends, colleagues, spouses drive home drunk. If they try, you stop them. You certainly don't get in the car with them.

Russian telecom giant Vimpelcom and Egypt’s Weather Investments have agreed to merge their assets, it has been announced.

The deal, worth $6.6 billion (£4.2 billion), will create the world’s fifth-largest mobile phone company, with combined subscriptions of more than 174 million. It will also give Vimpelcom, which has operations in many former Soviet republics, access to new markets in Africa and the Middle East.

The new company will operate in 20 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa.

UK mobile phone giant Vodafone, the world's biggest mobile operator by revenue, has announced the sale of its 3.2 per cent stake in China Mobile for around £4.3 billion.

The sale is the first of what is expected to be several sales of minority holdings as part of Newbury-based Vodafone’s strategy to focus on core markets as it tries to improve its share price.

The buyers of the stake, of which it is thought there may be several, have not been identified.

Spanish telecoms provider Telefónica has withdrawn its bid to acquire a further €7.15 billion stake in Brazil’s leading cell phone company, Vivo, currently owned by Portugal Telecom.

Spanish telecoms provider Telefónica has withdrawn its bid to acquire a further €7.15 billion stake in Brazil’s leading cell phone company, Vivo, currently owned by Portugal Telecom.

 

Telefónica and Portugal Telecom each own 50 per cent of Brasilcel, a Dutch registered holding company which owns 60 per cent of Vivo. Brasilcel is also listed on the Brazilian stock market, where the remaining 40 percent of its stock is publicly traded.
