Salt Lake City, Utah is a better bet for job hunters than Phoenix, Arizona, according to Going Global’s new reports Where the Jobs Are: Phoenix and Salt Lake City. While Salt Lake City has been fairly insulated from the global economic downturn, Phoenix, which was heavily reliant on the construction industry, has seen its unemployment rate more than double since the recession began.

Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Money is said to be close to purchasing the nationalised UK lender Northern Rock.

According to a report in the Sunday Times, Virgin is said to be front runner ahead of banking venture NBNK, which is headed up by Lord Levene and former Northern Rock CEO Gary Hoffman.

Final bids are due this week for the Newcastle-based bank, which UK taxpayers propped up with £1.4 billion following its collapse in 2007.

UK-based banking and financial services group HSBC has announced the sale of 195 of its retail branches in the US.

UK-based banking and financial services group HSBC has announced the sale of 195 of its retail branches in the US.

The branches, primarily in Upstate New York, are to be sold to First Niagara Bank for approximately $1 billion (approx. £608 million).

As of 31 May 2011, the branches held approximately $15 billion in deposits, $15 billion in gross assets including $2.8 billion in loans and $4.3 billion in assets under management.

Do you have a job description? I probably did, once, somewhere. I don’t remember what it said but I feel pretty sure it neither described what I did nor gave me any help prioritizing all the demands on my time. In most organizations that I work with, job descriptions serve a negative purpose: they exist to help managers fire under-performers or to arbitrate in territorial disputes.

Virgin Money has created 200 jobs in Edinburgh as part of its strategy to firm up its foothold in the UK banking sector.

The financial arm of Richard Branson’s Virgin Group is giving a much-needed boost to the Scottish capital, which has suffered from large-scale job cuts.

Virgin Money said the new jobs would bring its total workforce to 500.

The group is now looking for city-centre premises for a new operations office, with staff recruitment expected to begin early next year, ahead of the spring launch date set for Virgin Bank.
