Saudi Arabia’s national oil company, Saudi Aramco, has announced it is to form a joint venture to build and operate a chemicals complex in Jubail Industrial City, Saudi Arabia.

The joint venture, Sadara Chemical Company, will be formed with the Dow Chemical Company of Michigan in the US to build what the companies have called a “world-scale, fully integrated chemicals complex”.

Denman wins international power contract

Denman Instrumentation Ltd, based in Hull, England, has secured a major contract with French power engineering company Alstom on a €1 billion joint repowering and new construction project in the southeast of the Netherlands.

The complex project involves the integration of three new gas turbines into a former steam power plant near Maastricht to form a 1,280 MW combined cycle power plant. The project features the most advanced technology available for a power plant and will reduce CO2 emissions by 40 per cent.

Assmang Manganese

The heart of steel
Assmang’s properties are in the Kalahari manganese field in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, which contains some 80 per cent of the world's known high-grade manganese ore reserves, vital to the world’s steel industry. John O’Hanlon reports on major recent and projected investment at one of Africa’s largest manganese mines.
Assmang’s name is a contraction of Associated Manganese Mines of South Africa, as it was originally known when it was founded in 1935. For many years it specialised in manganese and chrome extraction, to which it added iron ore production in the early 1990s. Today it is jointly owned by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited and currently has three operating divisions based on its three commodities: chrome, manganese and iron ore.
