This is the sort of discovery that most geologists go into mining for, and the anticipation is palpable at Australian exploration company Peak Resources. On 29 February, Peak announced its first maiden resource at Ngualla in south-west Tanzania.

Norway’s Statoil and partner ExxonMobil have made a large gas discovery in the Zafarani exploration well offshore Tanzania. 

Norway’s Statoil and partner ExxonMobil have made a large gas discovery in the Zafarani exploration well offshore Tanzania. 

Logging results have shown what Statoil is calling a “high impact discovery”, so far proving up to five trillion cubic feet of gas in-place.

The well has encountered 120 metres of excellent quality reservoir with high porosity and high permeability, Statoil said. The gas-water contact has not been established and drilling operations are ongoing.

Valiant Investments has announced that it has invested a further US$50,000 into Trilith Resources.

Valiant Investments has announced that it has invested a further US$50,000 into Trilith Resources.

Valiant said that the funds will be used by UK-based Trilith to acquire natural resource projects in Zambia and Tanzania, with a principle focus on gold and copper mineralisation.

UK-based Valiant has now invested a total of $150,000 (approximately €104,000) into Trilith.

Zambia-based oil and gas exploration company Mafula Energy has attracted $60,000 of investment from London-based investment company Hot Rocks Investments.

Mafula is currently focused on establishing a portfolio of oil and gas exploration assets in Zambia. Nearby countries including Angola, Uganda, DRC and Tanzania have all made significant oil discoveries—thought to be due to their position within the oil-rich East Africa Rift System, from which Zambia could also benefit.

BP has announced the sale of its Southern African forecourt network to Puma Energy, a unit of international commodities trader Trafigura, for $296 million.

BP is selling its interests in forecourts and supply businesses in Namibia, Botswana, Zambia, Tanzania and Malawi. The sales do not include BP's refining and marketing businesses in Mozambique or South Africa.

African Barrick Gold has reported a half year net profit rise of 217 per cent.

African Barrick Gold has reported a half year net profit rise of 217 per cent.

Profits at the miner soared to $99 million (approx. €76 million) on the back of increased production and the rising price of gold.

Revenue rose by 64 per cent to $424 million (approx. €326 million) and production by 23 per cent to 356,208 ounces. Realised gold prices jumped by 28 per cent to $1,155 (approx €888) per ounce.
