Though multinational corporations are having success in emerging markets, it’s not necessarily because their global brands and products are besting local competition, according to new research from Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business. Rather, those corporations are entering and succeeding in emerging markets by launching adapted products and acquiring local brands.

PepsiCo today reported growth in volume, net revenue, operating profit and earnings per share for the third quarter of 2011.

The company reported top-line gains across its worldwide snacks and beverage businesses and from the acquisition of Wimm-Bill-Dann (WBD), the leading dairy and juice company in Russia.

Worldwide snacks volume grew 8 percent in the quarter and 7 percent year to date, while worldwide beverage volume grew 4 percent in the quarter and 6 percent year to date.

Ireland’s PetroNeft Resources has announced the discovery of an additional oil field within its licence at North Varyakhskaya, Russia.

The field is the seventh to be discovered in Licence 61, which is situated at Tomsk Oblast in south-western Siberia.

Tungolsky Licence 61, acquired by the company in May 2005, is located on the east side of the Ob River in the least explored oil-bearing region in the area. The licence covers 4,991 square kilometres.

Hendon has agreed to partner with Terra Resources to fulfil its funding commitments, which are estimated to be $90 million, for the development of the 85,000 acre oil and gas concession in Kalmykia.

Starbucks Coffee Company has announced a new corporate structure to accelerate its growth strategy, which will take effect by the end of September.

The coffee giant, based in Seattle, Washington, currently has two business units, Starbucks US and Starbucks Coffee International (SCI), with 20 percent of its revenues earned overseas.

The new structure will include three divisions; the Americas, China and Asia Pacific, and EMEA, covering Europe, the UK, the Middle East, Russia and Africa.

As part of the deal, Shell has agreed to let Gazprom share some of its overseas projects in return for Shell being allowed to develop the third and fourth stages of the Sakhalin project in Sakhalin Island, Russia. Sakhalin 3 alone contains 1.4 trillion cubic metres of gas.

Lincoln Electric Holdings, Inc. has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Mezhgosmetiz-Mtsensk OAO (MGM), a privately-held welding wire manufacturer based in the Orel region of Russia.

The acquisition will provide Lincoln its first manufacturing operation in Russia as well as established distribution channels to serve the growing Russian and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) welding markets. Terms were not disclosed. The acquisition has been approved by the Russian Federation regulatory agencies and is expected to close tomorrow.
