With a new beneficiation plant coming online, Assmang Manganese is preparing to double its production and become one of the biggest manganese mines in Africa, as Jane McCallion reports.

 

Formed in 1935 and listed on the Johannesburg Stock exchange the following year, Assmang Manganese Limited specialises in the mining of manganese, iron ores and chrome. The company, which is owned jointly by African Rainbow Minerals Limited and Assore Limited, operates mines in the Kalahari manganese field in the Northern Cape province.

Fast 'n Fresh is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Imperial Group of companies, the holding company being listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange. An operating company within the Consumer Products division of Imperial Logistics, Fast ‘n Fresh has its headquarters in Cape Town. It services the entire country from there and from a large and very modern distribution and fleet maintenance facility that was commissioned in Centurion, Gauteng, early in 2007, as well as a smaller depot in Durban.

Taking the gamble
Although gaming licences are often viewed as licences to print money, it’s not always as simple a process as it might seem, as Alan Swaby learns.
A decade ago, horse racing in South Africa was still being run much as it had been for the previous 100 years. Individual racecourses were owned by their members—largely a white, middle-class elite—who indulged their passion for the sport of kings along ‘club’, albeit straight, lines but with the added side benefit of having exclusive monopoly over punters wanting to place a wager (at least legally).

Logical logistics
OneLogix is getting noticed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange as it grows its portfolio of established, asset-rich niche businesses. There is just one qualification for membership, CEO Ian Lourens told John O’Hanlon—an entrepreneurial spirit that is still alive and well.
From the word go, there’s a lot of counter-intuitive things going on at OneLogix. For a start, it was surprising to find the CEO sitting in an office at the premises of one of the group companies, rather than at the corporate office just round the corner at Kempton Park to the north-west of Johannesburg. But Ian Lourens, a former senior executive of big brands like Hoechst and Beecham, ex-mayor of Midrand and past chairman of the Franchise Association of Southern Africa, has several pieds à terre around the country, because he likes to be close to the action.
