GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has today announced that it will fully acquire Cellzome, a developer of proteomics technologies, for £61 million.

GSK already owns 20 per cent of Cellzome, a privately owned company with laboratories in Cambridge, UK, and Heidelberg, Germany. The company will become part of GSK’s R&D organisation.

Trade intelligence company Zepol Corporation reports that US import shipment volume for December, measured in TEUs, decreased 8.2 percent from November, but increased 1.5 percent from December of 2010.

The total number of inbound shipments decreased 6.5 percent from November and increased 2.3 percent from December of last year. For the year 2011 as a whole, total TEUs are up 0.98 percent from 2010.

Sales of Mercedes-Benz reached record figures in 2011, Germany’s Daimler has announced.

Record sales in China and what the company termed “outstanding” development in the US contributed towards the figures reaching an all-time high. The brand also remains the strongest premium marque in Germany, the car maker said.

A total of 1,362,908 vehicles of the brands Mercedes-Benz, smart and Maybach were delivered to customers—around 77,000 units more than the previous record set in 2007 (1,285,900 units).

US battery manufacturer EnerSys announced today it has entered into a definitive agreement to launch a joint venture in Germany to produce large format lithium-ion battery cells.

EnerSys will have a majority interest in the joint venture in cooperation with GAIA Akkumulatorenwerke GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of Lithium Technology Corporation (LTC).

New partners from Germany and France have been signed up to the South Stream gas pipeline project, it has been announced.

Germany’s Wintershall Holding and France’s EDF have each acquired a 15 per cent stake in the offshore section of the South Stream project through a 30 per cent reduction of Italian Eni's stake.

South Stream is a project conceived by Russia’s Gazprom to construct a gas pipeline across the Black Sea to South European and Central European countries, for the purpose of diversifying natural gas export routes.

Construction and infrastructure specialist Ballast Nedam has signed a contract worth around €250 million with wpd for the engineering, supply and installation of 80 foundations at the Butendiek offshore wind farm in Germany.

The wind farm is located in the German Bight, 32 kilometres west of the island of Sylt, and consists of 80 turbines, each with a capacity of 3.6 MW—288 MW in total. The water depth at the wind farm is between 17 and 22 metres.

Rolls-Royce and Daimler, through their 50:50 joint venture, have agreed to take over the German engine manufacturer Tognum in a deal worth €3.4 billion.

The two companies first bid for Tognum in early March, offering €24 per share; however it wasn’t until they raised their offer to €26 per share that they secured the backing of Tognum’s board.

Friedrichshafen, Germany-based Tognum is the world’s second-biggest manufacturer of high-speed diesel engines for the defence, marine and energy sectors.

UK chemicals company Yule Catto has agreed to acquire its German rival PolymerLatex for €443 million (£376 million).

PolymerLatex, which makes a range of rubber-based products similar to Harrow-based Yule Catto’s, is currently owned by private equity house TowerBrook Capital Partners.

Under TowerBrook’s ownership, the company built a €60 million plant in Malaysia and created a new R&D facility near Dusseldorf, Germany.
