Swiss food giant Nestlé has agreed to acquire Pfizer Nutrition for $11.85 billion, it has been announced.

Nestlé said the acquisition would be a strategic fit with its infant nutrition business, given US-based Pfizer Nutrition’s complementary portfolio and strong presence in high-growth markets.

Nestlé described Pfizer Nutrition as a high-quality, high-growth infant nutrition business with strong brands, value-creating and accretive to the Nestlé model.

University College Dublin (UCD) has signed a memorandum of understanding with a leading Chinese dairy producer, Dairy United.

The agreement, which is expected to bring about multi-million Euro contracts for products and services, sets out the development of a China-Ireland Agricultural demonstration farm in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, as well as collaborative research projects, the provision of education and training, and collaboration on creating a trade corridor to facilitate the export of Irish products to Inner Mongolia.

Irish convenience food producer Greencore Group has announced it will acquire US-based Marketfare Foods for £22.6 million.

Marketfare, which is headquartered in Arizona, is a leading manufacturer of food-to-go products for convenience and small stores in the US. Its principal customer is 7-Eleven, with whom it has partnered for over 20 years.

Drinks maker William Grant & Sons is investing €35 million into a new distillery in Ireland for the production of Tullamore Dew whiskey.

The new distillery is to be built on a 58-acre site in Tullamore, Co. Offaly. The location of the facility is close to the site where the whiskey was originally made, which closed in 1954. Work on the new site is expected to be completed by the end of 2014.

Kraft Foods has opened a £17 million research and development facility at the home of Cadbury in Birmingham.

Facilities at the Global Centre of Excellence for Chocolate Research and Development in Bournville will include innovation labs, a pilot plant and a development kitchen. The centre will also be used to develop new products for other Kraft brands such as Milka and Toblerone.

The investment comes as the company said it will hire an extra 100 R&D staff in the UK, with 44 of those to be based at Bournville.

DuPont announced today an extension of its collaboration with the Australian Centre for Plant Functional Genomics (ACPFG) to improve the productivity of cereal crops.

The expanded program brings a new focus on advanced cereal breeding through molecular markers, discovery research for agronomic traits and hybrid seed production in wheat. 

The collaboration will also continue working toward increasing drought tolerance and decreasing the need for soil-applied nitrogen fertilizer in leading production crops, including corn, soybeans, canola, rice and sorghum.

Hotel and restaurant group Whitbread has announced it will create 10,000 new jobs in the UK over the next three years.

The new jobs will come as a result of Whitbread’s rapid expansion of its Premier Inn and Costa Coffee businesses, which already saw the creation of 2,500 jobs in the 2011/12 period.

Whitbread increased the number of Costa Coffee stores in the UK by 158 to 1,375 during the last year, and now has plans for an additional 10,000 Premier Inn rooms.

The 500th DQ restaurant is located in the Hu Dong finance district in Shanghai, and is operated by Shanghai Shida Catering Management Company, which already has more than 350 Dairy Queen sites throughout southern and eastern China.

Swiss onboard products and services provider gategroup has won a contract with Virgin Atlantic Airways to provide end-to-end catering services for the airline's long-haul operations from the UK.

The agreement, worth CHF40 million to CHF50 million per annum, is for services on Virgin’s flights from London Heathrow, London Gatwick, Manchester and Glasgow. The contract will take effect from June 1 this year for three years, with an option to extend for a further two years.

Swiss food giant Nestlé has announced a RMB 2.5 billion investment in China’s milk district.

The mayor of Shuangcheng, Mao Chen, and Nestlé’s director of Production Technology for the Greater China Region, Zhan Yudong, have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop modern dairy farming in the milk district.

The aim of the agreement is to ensure the district becomes China’s benchmark for best practice in dairy farming and management, Nestlé said.
