Boeing ended 2011 on a high with a 20 percent rise in net income for the fourth quarter, and 21 percent for the year as a whole, partly due to an increase in sales of commercial aircraft.

Net income for Q4 2011 was $1.39 billion, compared with $1.16 billion last year, while net income for the year was $4 billion, compared with $3.3 billion in 2010.

Revenues from commercial aircraft increased 31 percent in the final quarter compared to 2010, from $8.1 billion to $10.4 billion. For the years as a whole they were up 14 percent, from $31.8 billion to $36.2 billion.

Norwegian Air Shuttle has signed an agreement with both Airbus and Boeing for delivery of a total of 222 new aircraft—the largest such deal in European aviation history.

The order includes 100 new Boeing 737 MAX8s and 22 Next-Generation 737-800s, making Norwegian the European launch customer for Boeing’s new aircraft. The Airbus order—Norwegian’s first purchase from the company—includes 100 Airbus A320neos. The orders include additional purchase rights of 150 aircraft from both manufacturers.

Boeing chairman, president and CEO Jim McNerney welcomed the announcement. "For Boeing, this agreement represents the continuation of an enduring partnership between the company and the Kingdom that dates back to 1945 when President Franklin D. Roosevelt presented a DC-3 Dakota airplane to King Abdulaziz Al-Saud, the founder of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," he said.

UK manufacturer Avingtrans has been awarded a £3 million, three-year contract to supply rigid pipe assemblies to a market leader in the provision of flight controls.

Sigma Precision Components, a unit within Avingtrans' Aerospace division, has won the contract to deliver rigid pipe assemblies to a customer supplying clients across the aerospace and defence sectors, including Boeing.

Avingtrans manufactures components and provides associated services to the medical, energy, industrial and global aerospace sectors.

The arrival of the all-new jet marks the start of a six-month worldwide ‘Dream Tour’.

The aircraft will be in China, one of the world’s fastest-growing aviation and travel markets, until December 11, with stops in Beijing, Guangzhou and Haikou.

The tour will give Chinese customers, partners, government officials and media the opportunity to experience the new jet first-hand, Boeing said.

Boeing has secured its biggest ever commercial aircraft deal with a 230-plane, $21.7 billion order from Indonesia’s Lion Air.

The airline is ordering 201 737 MAXs and 29 Next-Generation 737-900 ERs (extended range), with the deal also inclusive of purchase rights for an additional 150 airplanes, valued at more than $14 billion if exercised at list prices.

British aero engineer Hampson Industries has won its largest ever tooling contract, worth $53 million (£34 million).

The contract is to design and manufacture lightweight mandrel tools for carbon fibre lay-up for a major commercial aerospace programme.

Although the West Midlands-based company did not name the customer, it is widely believed to be Boeing, the world's second largest commercial plane maker.

UK company Inmarsat has ordered a fleet of three advanced satellites from Boeing for about £629 million, in order to deliver faster broadband service to customers by the end of 2014.

The major upgrade to Ka-Band satellites will enable London-based Inmarsat to offer broadband to commercial and government clients at speeds up to 20 times faster and at less cost than its ageing L-Band fleet, which operates at the opposite end of the frequency spectrum.
