Rising to the challenge
As a continent lacking in much of the basic infrastructure essential for business, Africa could be seen as too challenging for some. But for those companies in the infrastructure sector, the market is wide open, as Likusasa has discovered. Becky Done reports.
Headquartered in Mauritius but with offices in Johannesburg and the other African countries where it is active, Likusasa’s primary focus is on the rolling out of distributed infrastructure including distributed power and mobile telecommunications networks in sub-Saharan Africa.

An operation of distinction
Langer Heinrich is taking a unique approach to mining uranium from its site in the Namib Desert. With the environment in mind, it uses naturally occurring reagents in its processes, as Becky Done finds out.
Sitting in the shadow of the Langer Heinrich Mountain, the Langer Heinrich Uranium Mine can be found around 80 kilometres inland from the port of Walvis Bay in the Namib Desert’s Namib Naukluft National Park. Having officially opened in March 2007 after a period of construction lasting around 12 months, the site is undergoing a series of expansions occurring in distinct stages.

A world class goal
South Africa’s Cape Town has a huge programme of improvements planned for its transport system. Looking to FIFA 2010 and beyond, the city’s aim is to provide accessible, affordable public transport for all—and it is making massive investments to achieve this goal, as Becky Done found out.
As South Africa’s most popular tourist destination, it would stand to reason that Cape Town should be served by a sound, reliable and effective public transport system. Johannesburg may be the country’s largest city but Cape Town is its most densely populated, and that’s another good argument for keeping this metropolis moving. But perhaps the most compelling incentive to provide an excellent public transport system comes from the world of sport—next year, the city will play host to several of the FIFA 2010 World Cup matches.

Glittering prospects
Cyprus-based EMED Mining has two exciting prospects on its hands: a copper development mine in Spain and a gold deposit in Slovakia. Developing both sites will require local expertise and a sensitive approach, as Becky Done finds out from Harry Anagnostaras-Adams.
Established in 2004, EMED Mining is a minerals developer focusing on copper and gold in the tectonic belt that extends 3,000 kilometres across Europe and the Middle East. The region is rich in deposits such as sulphide copper-gold, epithermal gold and porphyry copper-gold; and although the area has already undergone extensive mining over the years, EMED Mining has recognised that an abundance of opportunities still exists there.

The quality alternative

Fry’s Vegetarian Foods is committed to making a difference to the way we eat and the way we think about food. Becky Done talked to Wally Fry about how he has grown the company from his family’s kitchen to the worldwide brand it is today.

As lives get busier and schedules get more and more hectic, the first thing to fall by the wayside is often our health. Thinking about the origin of our food and what it means for us to purchase and consume it can seem like a luxury that only the cash or time rich can afford.

Celebrating people
Over the past four decades, South Africa’s number one retailer has worked hard to uplift local communities and develop its own people. More recently, it has also implemented a major re-branding across its stores, as Becky Done finds out from Pick n Pay CEO Nick Badminton.
Grocery chain Pick n Pay started back in 1967 when founder Raymond Ackerman, now the company’s chairman, bought four stores from a local businessman in Cape Town. Today, Pick n Pay is South Africa’s number one retailer, comprising 20 hypermarkets, 162 supermarkets and 127 Family Franchise stores, with an annual turnover of R45 billion (€4 billion).
